When Diasaster Strikes...

I just read that after the hurricane Katrina, only 15 percent of the lost animals were reunited with their families. How horrible is that.
Now that hurricane Irene has past our area, I am hoping that all the animals are safe. It's crazy, but if you think about it, no one ever mentions the animals on the news. Not even farm animals. I know at our farm it was a big discussion on whether or not to leave the horses in the barn. The concerns were, too much water, let them out, too much wind keep them in...in a hurricane, what do you do? They were kept in today, they were safer inside the barn than out.

I found this prayer and I will share it with you:

We call out to you, God, and ask for intercession on behalf of the animals.

Help these victims of disaster.

Give them a safe harbor, provide them with the nourishment, and quench their thirst.

Lead lost pets into kind hands and unite them with their families.

Supply wild creatures with new homes and abundant resources.

We pray for speedy recovery of all those affected by this catastrophe.

Let peace and healing fill the area.

And bless those called upon to assist during this time of tragedy.

Dolly, my mother's long time companion of 15 years went to rainbow bridge today. She was a great friend of my mothers and loyal to the end. She has been sick for several months now but her body was tired and it was time to leave. My mother is very sad, but she knows it was time.

Well, not only is it fun to feed wild birds in the winter, it will also help the birds out in a harsh winter. Instead of them digging in the snow for food, they can come to your feeder!
Just don't worry if they don't come right away, they have to find it first!

Before you know it, you will have a variety of pretty birds in your yard!

National Feral Cat Day

October 16, 2010 is National Feral Cat Day.

Thank you to everyone who takes care of the feral cats!

Did you know that feral cats live outdoors alongside people for over 10,000 years. Their home is the out doors!

Feral cats are not like your pet cats or stray cats, these cats are not socialized to people, so they can't be adopted.

Feral cats do live with other feral cats and they are call colonies.

If you want to help a feral cat, please trap-neuter-return them to the outdoors. This is called TNR. This does improve the cat's overall health.

My best friend is a 15 year old golden retriever named Faeden.

If you don’t consider animals a part of your family, this post will make no sense to you. That’s okay. My Mother isn’t crazy about animals either but Mountain Man and I are and our dogs are an integral part of our family; our children really and they mean the world to us.
A little over 14 years ago, I brought home an 8 week old bouncing baby boy golden retriever. I was interested in competing in obedience trials back then and I wanted to work with a golden retriever, a breed known for their willingness and capacity to excel at any task. I found the perfect puppy, a bundle of red, wiggly fluff and our journey began.
We went to puppy kindergarten together. Faeden was so wild the instructor came up to me and said “There, there dear, at least he’s a good looking puppy.” She doubted the ability of my squirming, always barking pup to manage the simplest challenge but I knew better.
Time passed and we went on to compete in obedience trials and he never let me down. He was a joy; always willing to try what I asked and always happy.
After we left the competitive obedience world, I began to teach obedience; puppy class mostly, and Faeden always accompanied me as my demo dog and partner. I told my students not to give up on their wild puppies because they would mature into remarkable dogs if given the chance and there was Faeden showing them just how a wild puppy can turn into a wonderful, mature dog.
When that chapter in our lives ended, we started visiting nursing homes and he brought joy to everyone he met as he seemed to know what each person needed. Maybe a wag of the tail or perhaps just some quiet time.
When my husband was killed, it was Faeden who kept me going. He slept with me in my big, empty bed, sat quietly with me for hours consoling me while I cried nonstop into his silky fur. He was my rock.
Then came Mountain Man and Faeden found a new dad who loved him as much as I did. “Old men together.” Mountain Man would always say to him as they’d sit by the wood stove or on the deck relaxing.
Age 14 came and Faeden was still going strong; a little slower and a little whiter but happy and healthy. Early this summer, he started to limp and I took him to the vet. The diagnosis was a little arthritis and the treatment was rest and some short walks and no more stairs. Mountain Man put in ramps everywhere and Faeden improved.
Last week was his 15th birthday and time for his physical. “I want to x-ray that shoulder.” the vet said. “Just to see what’s going on.” I suspected nothing. I was thinking the worst I’d hear was the arthritis was progressing. But the vet suspected something else.
The next day, she called me into her office, picked up the x-rays and showed me the bad news. There on the x-ray, clear as day, bone cancer. Six months left to live if we’re lucky, probably only a couple. A rapid moving, painful cancer that will travel into the lungs. Options? Not much for a dog his age. Amputation of the limb and chemotherapy but neither option will increase his life span.
I left in shock. How could my healthy appearing dog be dying? I couldn’t grasp the concept. I spent the day crying and the night throwing up from crying so much and then I cried some more the next day. I am not ready to let go. I’m not ready to lose my best friend.
But it’s not about me. It’s about Faeden. And saying goodbye to the best friend I’ve ever had who has always been there for me. I have gathered my strength and with the help of Mountain Man, we shall make these last days he is with us special and happy and when he tells us he is ready to leave, I will do all in my power to ease his final journey. He would do it for me. He’s my best friend.
That is why my dear friends I’ve been sad. Thank you for all your support and comments. They mean so much to me.

I know first hand how long it took Lilly to trust our family and I can only pray that Tessia finds her furever home soon.

Adopt a Less-Adoptable Pet: Tessia

Today, we're featuring another special needs kitty from the Gananoque and District Humane Society. Again, we know most of you are in the U.S. and overseas, but still....We've learned never to underestimate the power of the Internet -- and the Cat Blogosphere in particular! At the very least, Tessia certainly could use purrs and prayers and crossed paws for a wonderful forever home! Our mom has sent her info to the local paper for inclusion as next week's Cat-of-the-Week feature.

Age: Approx. 5 years
Sex: Female

Tessia, who was born deaf, was brought to us in early June 2010 after her owner passed away. She was placed in a foster home to give staff a better idea of her needs and any special considerations she would need to have in a home environment. Her foster mom informed us that she was avid climber and spent most of her time up high, no doubt a coping strategy to provide a "bird's eye view" and avoid surprises.

Tessia is particularly clean and fastidious and will occasionally lick people's hands. She is a sweet girl who needs some time in the right forever home to heal from the loss of her human and regain her trust. If you feel you can give this beautiful girl a loving and understanding home, please come and meet her!

Tessia is spayed and is up-to-date with routine vaccinations.

Changing of the seasons...

It sure does feel like fall where I live! The air is nice and crisp and I see a lot of leaves turning color already! It's a little early to proclaim fall but where I love the fall I'm going to enjoy the changing of the seasons. I'm sure we are in for some hot weather soon, but for today, I'm going to relax and take my dogs for a walk in the fresh, crisp air!

Prayers needed

I was at the Emergency Veterinary clinic tonight and a women was there whose dog, ChiChi is in distress. I had told her that I would post her beloved dog on my prayer blog and she was more than thrilled. I don't know what is wrong with ChiChi, only that she was in severe distress and pain. Her mom had no idea what was wrong and when I left, the vets didn't know either.

Please keep ChiChi in your prayers and please send her positive energy.

Please keep Phantom from The Chronicle of Woos in your prayers. He may be having surgery on Tuesday if all his lab work is clean. He has a very bad lump on the side of his face and it shows "significant criteria for malignancy."
The vet is concerned for Phantom and you know when that happens, our precious pets need all the prayers we can send. I will be praying for good lab results and a good prognosis. I will also pray for the vets and technicians and Phantom's family.

Fancy went to The Rainbow Bridge

Hello Friends, Fancy went to the Rainbow Bridge today. It was a very sad for us, my Mom has had her since she was a kitten and she would have been 19 in August. She was a faithful friend to my mother and she lived a good life on the farm. She enjoyed the outdoors and went outside everyday of her life. For those of you who don't know the poem Rainbow Bridge, I will post it for you.

Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth

It is called Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.

Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows,

hills, valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this special place.

There is always food and water and warm spring weather.

The old and frail are young again.

Those who are maimed are made whole again.

They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth,

so each day they run and play until the day comes

when one suddenly stops playing and looks up!

The nose twitches! The ears are up!

The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group!

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet,

you take him or her into your arms and embrace

your face is kissed again and again,

and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Dolly & Fancy

Hey Friends, I would like to ask you to keep my Mother's two pets in your prayers. They are both nearing the end and my Mom is very upset. Dolly is close to 16 years, I think, she is my Ariel's mother. Fancy cat will be 19 in August. Mom got Fancy from me. Someone left a litter on my door step and my mother took one of the kittens. Fancy was found yesterday in her swimming pool floating on her back. She must have fallen in somehow. But today, she is not doing well at all.

Although Fancy cat has been failing for a few weeks now, the vet thought she would go to rainbow bridge a few weeks ago.

This is what a pelican is suppose to look like! Not like this, dipped in oil. I am just lost for words on the poor wildlife and people in the Gulf of Mexico with the huge oil spill. Please keep everyone in your prayers. I am praying that BP can find an answer and I can see on television that they are working effortlessly trying to stop this. I pray that they will find a way. Who would have ever thought this would happen. Not them or anyone else.

Please pray for the wildlife, the BP people and the people effected by this huge tragedy. (I could only find this picture on the Internet that I could use of a pelican in oil.)

Gulf of Mexico oil spill

Please pray for the wildlife that is effected by the horrible oil spill in Gulf of Mexico. From watching the news, they seem to be working as hard as they can to stop this disaster. Now it may come up the east coast. I am also praying for all the men and women who are out of work and the men and women who are working 24 hours a day trying to solve this massive problem.
I know they are doing the best they can. I just pray for all them and that they find a suitable plan to stop the oil spill. I am praying for the wildlife, that somehow they will get out of harms way.

Please pray for the animals that are treatened by the volcanic ash.

I read an article today that has me very upset, for Iceland's farmers, the article was about the volcanic ash and how the ash could very well kill all of their livestock or make the animals very sick. As most of you are aware of, the Iceland volcano has

erupted this week under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. Now the farmers are trying

desperately to save their animals. If the animals ingest any of this ash, they could get into major medical problems. They are working around the clock to save their animals by getting them into shelters.

I would like to have everyone who reads this, to stop and say a prayer for the people and the animals who are trapped in this volcano. I pray that they stay healthy and that they find the necessary shelter to stay safe.
One of the farmers said that his animals will have to be kept in the barn with the windows covered up and brought clean food and water.

To me, this is horrifying and I will keep them in my prayers that they will somehow

find a way out of this and the volcano stops erupting.

Is it April already!

Hi friends! It's already April and it's Spring time, finally! Now is the time to clean up the yard and get my yard ready for my pets! The one thing I have stopped doing a few years ago is using a fertilizer on my lawn. Not only is it bad for the children but my pets too! Then I read somewhere that they walk in the fertilizer and or pesticides, come in the house and sit on my couch. As soon as that dawned on me, it was all done. I never used them again! Maybe our lawn doesn't look the best in the neighborhood, but it's fine with me!

I really hope you all have a great spring time and please remember that I only post about once a month on this blog because I wanted to use it as a place to request prayers for your pets.

Spring is around the corner!

I am so glad spring is around the corner! I love spring and everything that it brings, the warm weather and longer days. Being able to bring your pets outside to enjoy the sun without freezing!!

I want to ask everyone to pray for the animals that are trapped in the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile. How horrible that not only are the families are displaced but all the animals too that just do not understand what is going on. They must be scared, hungry and lonely.

Also, please pray for all the animals who have blogs that have been sick. Max, is one of the pets that needs your prayers. There are many, many pets and wild animals that need our prayers.

All I want is good home...

I can't believe it is February already and Spring is getting closer. The days are getting longer and the sun is a little brighter. I can truly see the difference in the weather.

This month I would like to focus on all the feral cats and how lonely they must feel at times. My Mom just took in a cat last week because it is cold, very cold, below zero degrees with the windchill factor. She had the pretty black cat for a week and I was actually thinking of taking it, then the neighbor showed up. My mother asked her why is your cat outside in this frigid weather at 11:00 at night, for several nights, mind you...The poor cat was curled up in a ball on her porch, freezing, hungry, thirsty. Why...no answer of course and they took the cat home. I can't stand this when this happens. People should not own animals if they cannot take care of them and get them neutered or spayed and be able to afford them their shots. I know this cat is a barn cat and that is just mean because of all the wild animals in the yard. It makes me furious to think of it.

Feral cats need to be loved too.

Max was just diagnosed with a Mast Cell Tumour and Max is receiving surgery for this. I feel very blessed to know Max and his Mom because they were the ones to go out of their way to tell me that my friends connect was not set up properly, meaning, you could not follow my animal blog! How thoughtful and kind of them to do that and to help me out. Over the past months, I have grown very fond of MAX and his adventures. Please keep MAX in your prayers and his Mom.

Mother Nature is at it again!

It's November 1st and probably my most favorite month! I love the crispness of the air. You know what I thought was interesting, I was walking around today out behind my house, remember we have had two days where it snowed, we have had two hard frosts or maybe more, but look at these flowers, they just aren't giving up! These Black Eye Susan's are still blooming and these Inpatients were from 2008. I took them out of the window boxes, I thought they had died in the fall of 2008, in the spring of 2009; there they are, blooming in the woods. I thought Inpatients were annuals? The weird part is, November 1, 2009, they are still blooming. Mother Nature is working at her finest! I love things like this!
